I was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio—a city that richly deserves to be flown over. After grad school I moved to upstate New York to cover the crime beat for The Saratogian. On slow news days, I made up true crime stories.

I then moved to San Francisco where I wrote and performed sketch comedy, earning a “Best of the Bay” nod from the Bay Guardian. I also wrote two short comedy films, one of which screened at the San Francisco International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival. During my SF years, I co-founded a comedy troupe, The Better Off Dead Poet’s Society, and managed to get some god-awful poetry published in Girlfriend Number One (Cleis Press), a pretty good essay published in Virgin Territory (Masquerade Books) and some phenomenal writing in Girljock (St. Martin’s Press).

Following my move to Los Angeles, I worked as a story analyst for Sony and Dreamworks, and then as a writer for the screen. I’ve written multiple screenplays, two of which were optioned. I also wrote for an FX sitcom executive produced by Howard Stern, as well as several other TV shows and pilots alongside some of the industry's most talented creators. Between gigs, I worked as a freelance journalist and interviewed Lily Tomlin, Emmy-award winning actress Holland Taylor, as well as Olympic legend Greg Louganis.

My teaching career includes Essay Writing at Ohio State, English Literature at Siena College, Writing for Performance at the San Francisco Art Institute, and Screenwriting at Whatcom Community College. I hold a PhD in Narrative Theory from Ohio State University, which I only mention when I’m losing an argument.

I currently live in Bellingham, Washington, where I founded Haymaker, Inc., a ghostwriting firm for TV, film and commercial directors, and the Bellingham Writers Workshop.
